Maxeon Rumored to Build 3 GW TOPCon Battery and Module Plant in New Mexico
Maxeon is investing $1 billion to build a 3 GW TOPCon cell and module plant in the United States.
Maxeon Solar Technologies' first U.S. facility will be located in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The new 3 GW-scale facility will produce TOPCon photovoltaic silicon cells and Maxeon's proprietary stacked cell high-performance solar modules.
The company said the new plant will produce millions of solar modules annually for the growing U.S. utility-scale solar power and distributed generation markets.
New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham said, "This private investment demonstrates that our state program, combined with President Biden's Inflation Reduction Act, opens the way for New Mexico to grow its clean energy economy and create strong labor jobs in the future."
Maxeon said the total investment in the project is expected to exceed $1 billion. The company is currently in the due diligence phase of its loan application, and siting the project is a key milestone in completing the loan process with the U.S. Department of Energy's (DoE) Office of Loan Programs.
"Thanks to the support of the Biden administration, the U.S. is now poised to relocate back to and expand the domestic supply chain for solar products," said Bill Mulligan, CEO of Maxeon, "We see tremendous opportunity to help the country move forward with its clean energy initiatives and have a strong impact on the local economy."
Maxeon has selected a 160-acre site in the Mesa Del Sol community for a solar cell manufacturing plant, panel assembly plant, warehouse, and administrative offices.Maxeon reports that its new plant is expected to be the first large-scale cell and module manufacturing facility in New Mexico. While the plant's planned capacity is 3 GW, the company says it has the potential to ramp it up to 4.5 GW in the future.
