Mitsubishi Conducts 5.5MW Pressurized Alkaline Electrolyzer Tests in Japan, Norway

16-10-2023

Mitsubishi Power Corporation, a subsidiary of the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Group, has begun the start-up validation process for two 5.5 MW electrolyzer tanks at the Hailua Industrial Park in Norway and Takasago Hydrogen Park in Japan.

The short-term validation of the Norwegian electrolyzer, including 96 hours of base load operation, has been completed. Long-term validation of the electrolyzer in Japan is underway under realistic conditions, with tests covering performance, operation, startup, shutdown, gas quality, safety and digital control integration.

Mitsubishi Power said, "Test objectives include performance, operation, startup, shutdown, gas quality, safety and digital control integration."

Mitsubishi Power plans to incorporate the design of these single-stack pressurized alkaline electrolysers into the Advanced Clean Energy Storage (ACES Delta) project in Delta, Utah, USA. This is a green hydrogen initiative with Chevron that will begin commercial operations in 2025.

The facility will use renewable energy and store hydrogen in two 150GWH capacity salt caverns. The electrolyzers are being supplied by Norway's HydrogenPro AS, which previously partnered with Mitsubishi Power to build one of the world's largest single-stack high-pressure alkaline electrolyzers.

In a statement released at the time, the Japanese company said, "The order underscores our confidence in HydrogenPro's electrolyzer system, as we have been working with HydrogenPro since last year to build and validate one of the world's largest single-stack high-pressure alkaline electrolyzer systems in Norway."

At normal current densities, the HydrogenPro electrolyzer produces 1,100 cubic meters of hydrogen per hour, which is equivalent to 100 kilograms of pure hydrogen per hour, setting a new industry standard.
