PV-powered 1 GW data center complex planned for South Korea
South Korea's Ministry of Industry, Trade and Resources (MOTIE) has decided to build a data center complex in Haehae-gun, Jeollanam-do, in cooperation with Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) and Jeonnam Development Corporation. The complex will primarily utilize photovoltaic power generation.
A number of regional agencies and companies, including Samsung Physical Products, LG CNS, NH Investment Securities, Boseong Industry, TGK, DRD Korea, and Deus Systems, are participating in the program.
The complex will house 25 data centers, each with a capacity of 40 MW. the entire construction process will be carried out in phases, and it is expected that at least five data centers will be built by 2027.
The project will require a total investment of 10 trillion won ($7.53 billion). In addition, MOTIE did not disclose specific details about the solar aspect of the project or whether the project will receive public support.
There are other gigawatt-scale solar projects currently underway in South Korea.
In December last year, a consortium led by Hanwha Asset Management said it would build a 1.5 GW-scale solar project with a total investment of 3 trillion won on the rooftops and unused land of the Daegu Industrial Park. South Korea also announced the construction of a 2.1 GW floating solar project and a 3 GW ground-mounted PV array project in the Saemangeum area. Currently, the country's largest solar power plant is a 150 MW solar park in Sinan-gun, Jeollanam-do, developed by Southeast Power. Jeollanam-do also has the highest number of renewable energy projects under development in South Korea.
