Average rooftop solar system installation size in Australia exceeds 9 kW

12-08-2023

The size of rooftop solar installations continues to rise, with the average size of rooftop photovoltaic (PV) systems installed in Australia in the second quarter of 2023 at 9.3 kW, compared to 8.7 kW back in the first quarter of 2023, according to an analysis by the Australian Energy Commission (AEC) of the latest Carbon Markets Quarterly Report published by the Clean Energy Regulator (CER). The average system size in the second quarter of 2023 is 9.3 kW compared to 8.7 kW in the first quarter of 2023, a slight increase and well above the accepted standard of 6.6 kW.

Rooftop systems installed in northern homes during the second quarter were the largest. Between April 1 and June 30, 2023, they installed systems up to an average size of 14.1 kW, followed closely by Queensland and South Australia, both of which installed systems of 10.1 kW on average during this period.

AEC said the growth in system size continues a trend in recent years whereby Australian households and businesses are keen to take advantage of technological advances and falling market costs in their quest for greater energy independence.

At the end of the second quarter, total installed rooftop solar capacity in Australia had reached 20.5 GW, with more than 61,000 new systems added to the grid in three months, totaling 520 MW of installed capacity.

The number of rooftop PV systems installed in Australia during the first quarter of 2023, which totaled 80,300, was down in comparison to the second quarter, but the AEC noted that there is a 12-month lag in reporting the data, and that the second-quarter figures are expected to be revised upwards.

"Based on forecasts, the final numbers are expected to be higher, with approximately 91,000 new rooftop PV systems expected to be installed by the end of the reporting period," the report said, adding that the surge in installations is expected to bring the total installed capacity to 827 MW, which further suggests that the 2023 second quarter will see an increase in the adoption of rooftop solar solutions."
