Austria releases grid capacity map that can be used for grid-connected photovoltaics
Austria's Oesterreich Energy Association has developed a grid capacity map as a guide for system operators.
Franz strepfl, a spokesman for the electricity industry association, explains, "A key element in building renewable energy power plants is whether there is sufficient local grid capacity available." He noted that the map will help facilitate the planning and deployment of PV systems. He added: "In this way, we are creating a highly transparent system throughout Austria for up-to-date utilization of substations, which will lead to better system planning. We are currently feeling the great dynamism of the PV industry."
The map was created two years ago when the Austrian government introduced ElWOG. These regulations prompted the country's grid operators to specify their available grid connection capacity in addition to other relevant requirements.
The map will be updated quarterly by the Oesterreich Energy Association, using reports from the Austrian system operator. The map provides an advance overview of grid connection requests but does not directly replace them, the association said. PV systems must obtain binding commitments for grid connection from the grid operator.
An industry survey by PV Magazine shows that obtaining a grid connection permit is a major challenge, as noted by many market participants. In a survey, 66% of members believe that accessing the grid is a significant challenge.
PV Austria calls for modern e-commerce legislation and plans to work with the Ministry of Climate Protection and Electronic Control to remove barriers to PV expansion.
Austria's annual PV installation exceeds 1 GW for the first time in 2022.PV Austria magazine said developers installed 1,009 MW of solar energy, with more than 740 MW in 2021, 341 MW in 2020, and 247 MW in 2019.The country's cumulative PV capacity had reached 3.79 GW by the end of 2022, accounting for last year's national electricity demand of 6.6%.
