Hithium and Solarpro to build 55 MWh energy storage facility in Bulgaria
In a press release issued yesterday, the companies claimed that this would be the "largest" battery storage project in Southeastern Europe, and that the facility would support an existing 33 MWp solar power plant. The press release did not reveal who owns the existing 33 MWp solar project.
China-based energy storage company Hithium will supply the batteries for the 55 MWh project, while Bulgaria-based solar contractor Solarpro will provide engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services.
Hithium will supply 16 energy storage batteries with a capacity of 3.44 MWh.
An unnamed company of Renalfa, a Vienna-based independent power producer, will be the owner of the battery energy storage system (BESS), according to a press release. The investors have decided to install the batteries inside an existing PV plant with a capacity of 33 MWp
The array will include a PV tracker mounting system and a substation.
According to recently published statistics from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Bulgaria has an installed solar PV capacity of 1,948 MW by the end of 2022.Last month, the Bulgarian government launched its first renewable energy project, which is expected to allocate more than 1,400 MW of power generation capacity and more than 350 MW of energy storage capacity.
