Italy added about 2.3 GW of new PV system capacity in the first half of 2023, an increase of about 12% from 

the same period last year. At the end of June 2023, the country's cumulative installed PV capacity stood at 

around 27.4 GW.

Residential household installed capacity accounted for about 47% of the capacity additions in the first half 

of the year, while recent growth has been driven by commercial and industrial (C&I) systems and utility-scale 

solar projects of more than 1 MW in size.

"Compared to the first quarter of this year, grid-connected power from C&I systems and utility-scale solar 

projects over 1 MW in size increased by 49% and 89%, respectively, in the second quarter of 2023," Italia 

Solare said.

Grid-connections of power plants of more than 10 MW size, which had been stalled since July 2022, restarted 

in the second quarter of 2023. In particular, two 10 MW plants in Piedmont and Puglia and a 36 MW plant in 

Sardinia completed additional grid connections.

Conversely, the residential household sector saw a slight decrease in installed capacity additions from 569 MW 

in the first quarter of 2023 to 528 MW in the second quarter due to the expiry of the Super Allowance and the 

discontinuation of generation.

Regions with the highest share of total new installations include Lombardy Region (429 MW), Veneto (353 MW 

and Emilia-Romagna (235 MW).

Lombardy successfully defended its title with 3.58 GW of cumulative installed capacity, increasing the gap 

with the Puglia region, which has 3.18 GW of grid-connected PV capacity.In the first quarter of 2023, 

Lombardy led the way with 429 MW of grid-connected electricity, followed by Veneto and Emilia-Romagna, 

with 353 MW and 235 MW, respectively.
