The latest report from the Global Off-Grid Lighting Association (GOGLA) shows that global sales of solar kits, including portable lights, multi-light systems and solar home systems, reached 9.5 million units in 2022, of which 5.2 million units were sold between July and December 2022.

Speaking at the South Asia International Forum on Distributed Energy (SAFDE), Ajay Mathur, Director General of the International Solar Alliance (ISA), said, "This is a clear indication that we are beginning to recognize the value of solar kits, while also focusing on off-grid utilization architectures ." The SAFDE forum was organized by GOGLA with the support of India's New and Renewable Energy Sector and Good Energies Foundation.

Gogla's global off-grid solar market report is based on sales data from the association's off-grid solar and energy efficiency equipment manufacturers. Of the 5.2 million kits sold in the second half of 2022, 3.2 million were sold for cash and another 2 million were pay-as-you-go (PAYGo), the report said. Products sold included 3.11 million portable handheld lights, 1.08 million solar home systems and 1.01 million multi-light systems.

Sales of solar home systems (including all products with 11 peak watts and higher) reached 1.08 million units in the second half of 2022, an increase of 69% compared to the first half of the year. Of all solar home systems sold between July and December 2022, 90 percent were pay-as-you-go.

The report notes that sales of solar kits in India have continued to decline as the solar kit portfolio evolves from traditional off-grid products, such as portable lamps and plug-and-play kits, to weak-grid products. Nonetheless, portable lamps and other off-grid solar solutions continue to be used in the Indian market for outdoor purposes, as grid back-ups, or as a primary power source prior to the grid.

In the second half of 2022, sales of off-grid solar kits in India stood at 432,200 units. Solar home systems account for less than 1% of total sales.
